Animals responding to the unseen

How many of you have seen first hand, a dog or cat stop what they are doing to stare intently at a corner of the room, and maybe even vocalising at something we cannot see or explain?

Twice, I witnessed this, in the old place at Annerley, where three of my family members in years past, had passed.

Among other stories, I suppose it's as good a place as any to share those experiences, and while I cannot explain what happened truly, there is no doubt in my mind that my pets could detect something going on that I could not.

The first time, both my Rottweiler dogs, who had been sleeping on the floor at my feet, sat up, ears pricked, and moved over to stand about 2m from the corner of the dining room, where the phone table and an old dresser were located. The stared at this corner in silence, and would not come when called, only looking over to me, then turning their attention back to the corner. This went on for 2 or 3 minutes before they just stopped doing it, almost simultaneously turned and came back over, tail stumps wagging, to plop back down on their mats and go to sleep.

The second time, I and my then-husband were woken by the sound of deep growling directly under our bedroom in the same house. No idea of the time, but we both dressed and headed on down there with torches, because when Diesel growled or barked, there was good reason to investigate. Now, this was an old Qld cottage, built in 1893, on 9 foot stumps at the front (directly under our room) and 5 foot ones at the back of the house, to accommodate the slope of the land. On arriving under the house, we both saw Diesel standing with all hackles up, a terrifying rolling growl coming almost constantly from him, on high alert, and we both thought he had bailed up a thief, as crime was rampant in our suburb. Two very bright powerful torches showed nothing, not even a rat or possum that might have provoked such an over-reaction from Diesel the Rott, and we searched everywhere. At no time did Diesel even show he knew we were there, he never moved his rivetted stare from the place he was looking. There simply wasn't anything there, but he would NOT stop this unbelieveable growling, and we never heard him utter it again in the course of his lifetime with us. We couldn't call him away, he wouldn't leave, and perplexed, we searched the entire under house, which didn't take long, and the yard outside. Nothing. We were standing out the front at some ungodly hour of the morning shining our torches on the outside of the house and roof when Diesel came out and joined us. No idea what he saw or why he reacted so.

Yep was once at a mates place years ago and had his dog bark furiously at the wall yet there was nothing there that the human eye could see anyway.

G'day, i've never really believed in animals seeing things, whereas i've seen heaps of weird stuff over the years. However bout 4 years ago, our cat that we had owned for a good 16 years went down hill real quick. Could barely walk or eat etc. But a number of times she would start rubbing her head and purring ( like when cats rub up against your legs), on noone, like just randomly in the middle of the lounge room walk over and start purring and rubbing her against nothing. And a couple times asleep on the lounge she'd wake up and start purring and lift her chin up like when we would give her a scratch under the chin and stare at the empty seat. Was strange. I was going to submit a thread re this and low and behold Shaz has already done so.

Recently I moved premises (closer to Brisbane) from a house to a unit. We have a small dog and needs his walks three times a day. I get the late night walk duty before bed, which at times is quite late at night. I found it odd that every time we walk to the position across from the church my dog stops and looks over at the church grounds (across the road), obviously observing something for a while before continuing. Same spot and looks in the same direction - no additional noises or movement evident. Thinking a ghost I stood also trying to see if I could see anything - nothing. Will go over tonight and look closer around the grounds.

Only issue is - last night it was windy, while my dog was looking in the direction the wind stopped (dead), and it went dead silent. It was a bit scary - especially when your mind plays tricks and you start seeing things move in the corner of your eyes. Things started going through my mind - demons, dogman - thanks Senses. It was creepy. My dog gave a bit on an internal whimper like noise followed by a snort and then continued sniffing around. Not long after wind started again - coincidence?

I believe animals see things we cannot, or at least feel a presence.

I agree animals definitely can sense and feel an unnatural presence. A friend of mine had high paranormal activity in her house particularly one room which happened to be her sons' bedroom. Their dog an Irish Wolfhound cross just refused to go into that bedroom it was quite protective of the kids but nothing would coax it into that room.
The wind completely abating is another unusual occurrence when an unnatural entity is present.
This phenomenon has been reported when a Bigfoot or Yowie enters the fray.

When I was a kid and we lived in the country, we asked the next door neighbours to feed our dog while we were away. They told us that our dog would howl, beginning a day or so before we arrived back home. The neighbours said they always knew when we'd be back, based simply on this

Some years ago we adopted a neglected cat. She was very intelligent and well behaved. Being quite elderly and in ill-health, she spent much of her time sleeping. Shortly after we adopted her, we bought a new place, brand-new. When we'd been in the new place for a few months, the cat startled the daylights out of me one night by staring at a blank wall before leaping at it with all fours. Her claw marks are still in the wall, next to the desk I'm sitting at right now. She hung there for several seconds, hissing and howling ferociously. I had to help her get her claws out when it was over. Then she bolted upstairs. Only time she did it. Wish she could have told me what it was about

Though I had three cats at the place where I kept hearing/feeling odd things, not one of them ever gave any indication of being freaked out, but cats are a law unto themselves at the best of times.

Having said that, I would like to share this anecdote; again, it happened at the place I lived for 16 years, which was built by my great grandfather on Dad's side, in 1897. He passed it to his only daughter, my Grandmother, and NanNan (Grandma's mother) and my Great Grandfather passed away in the house. So even though when I moved in and experienced odd sounds, I never felt frightened, believing it was their prescences lingering in 'their' house.

So on several occasions, while under the house doing the laundry, I heard footsteps, clear as day, move from the front of the house (main front door and bedrooms at that end), pass down the hall directly over my head while I was using the washing machine, and seemingly stop there. Under the house was bare dirt, well packed-down over the generations, and the house was on wooden stumps about 6 foot tall at the back, and about 8 foot tall at the front of the house. Now, at these times, the dogs were almost ALWAYS downstairs with me, as that's just what Rotties do, they are your shadow all the time, so I knew it wasn't the dogs and the steps were not 'dog steps' but people walking steps. A couple of times I raced up the back stairs with dogs in pursuit in case someone had sneaked inside while we were all under the house, but no, never a sight of anyone did we find.

My then-husband was sceptical, until the dog events I've described in my opening post in this thread, occurred. After that, he didn't really dis-believe, but he didn't really believe, either, if that's possible. ANYWAY... onto the story.

Often, late at night or in the middle of the night, I'd have to go to the loo, which was right at the back of the house, so I'd have to walk through the entire length of the house from my bedroom right at the FRONT of the house. Now, at 3am, you are on autopilot, trying not to 'wake' yourself too much in case you find it hard to get back to sleep, so you go to the loo, do your thing, go back to bed. Except, on a number of occasions, while ON the loo, I'd hear those footsteps again, moving from the front of the house, to the back, and as the loo was the last room in the back of the house, the steps sounded like they stopped just short of the door.

Now, not sure about you, but I don't bother closing the loo door at 3am in the morning, modesty is not my concern in the dead of night.

Anyway, I'd told hubby previously of this happening, and how the steps stopped before I could see anything when I left the loo.
BUT THIS TIME, I HEARD THE STEPS APPROACHING AS I GOT UP FROM THE LOO AND WAS WAITING JUST INSIDE THE DOORWAY!

I was a little freaked, thinking THIS TIME I MIGHT SEE SOMETHING~! and willing myself to be brave, I quickly stepped out of the loo and into the hall.
There in front of me was a hulking human shape and I screamed like a little child.

It was my husband, who had also decided to go to the loo, and it's lucky I had just 'been' otherwise he would have scared the s#@t out of me.

Levity aside, the footsteps continued to be heard from time to time, and I finally got my satisfaction; One day, hubby was working under the house, mucking around with fishing gear before a trip in the boat, and heard the footsteps pass over his head. I was out the back and he could see me from where he stood, so he knew it wasn't me.

He believed then.

Many of those who recount their paranormal experiences report hearing the sound of footsteps which are impossible to explain (once the usual 'boards creaking' and 'house cooling down/warming up' type explanations are discounted)

Is it a type of calling-card from the deceased, or do the deceased choose at times to walk around their old stomping-grounds, at least in memory? And if so, by what mechanism do their footsteps register to us as 'real' /audible?

If audible footsteps are chosen as a calling-card, perhaps the deceased believe the sound of their footsteps will serve to remind us of their presence without causing us the same sort of psychic trauma as would occur if they were to appear before us

It's the kind of speculation which brings to mind those Yowies which seemingly choose to be seen, such as the one in the account provided by a woman (can't remember the video number) who was driving home alone after dark. She had to cross a rural bridge, after which she had to swing fairly hard at the end whilst revving-up to tackle an ascent. There, at the junction of the bridge-end and sharp turn, was a Yowie. It apparently made no attempt to conceal itself despite the sound of the car going over the bridge would have provided it time to seek concealment in shrubs. Seems it had chosen to make itself visible to her as did the short Yowie (Gympie video) which strolled down the road in full daylight before two brothers hoping to get a lift

So many incidents in life to make us ponder …

Back to pets/animals: we had a house in SE Qld for several years which was relatively new and appeared completely normal. Almost immediately after we moved-in, it became obvious that there was something wrong going on. All sorts of things happened, most of them very disturbing. Our little dog, who was almost human, never uttered a peep during the occurrences. Yet at other times, such as prowlers or strangers at the door, he was right onto it
